The Last Letter

How do you write a letter to someone who is dying? Especially someone who has had such an influence in your life.
I did a google search before I started writing. I didn’t want to get it wrong. A lot of people out there suggested that you talk about some good memories and then say goodbye, but I didn’t want to say goodbye. It felt like I was condemning them even though death was inevitable.
I decided to let them know what I’ve been up to since we parted last. My life, my kids, the good stuff. Then I told her how much she influenced my life. At the end I told her that I loved her and left it at that. No goodbyes.
The letter took me so long to write I was afraid it wouldn’t make it to her on time, but it did and I’m relieved that I didn’t wait to send it to her.

So here is where I will say goodbye:

Jacquie,
I will miss you so much. You have taught me that its OK to fall as long as you get back up and try again. I learned to challenge myself and believe that anything is possible as long as you work hard for it. You will never be forgotten. My only regret is that I won’t be able to send my children to your dance studio for lessons.
I hope your passing is in peace and surrounded by loved ones. My love to you always.

  1. I had a similar delema when I wrote to her. It is so hard to put 20 plus years of love, sweat, sore muscles, tears and laughter into words on a page. Especially for dancers, we are physical beings. We show our love differently. I am glad you were able to get the letter to her in time. Love you Sara Beth.
